NGMN lays out Agentic AI challenges for autonomous networks
The Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance's 'Network Automation and Autonomy Phase III: Agentic AI for Autonomous Mobile Networks' argues that Agentic AI could become a key enabler of operational autonomy β but only if the industry solves interoperability, security, governance, and data first. The report identifies eight challenge areas including fragmentation across standards bodies (3GPP, TM Forum, ETSI, O-RAN, IETF, W3C, BBF), limited multi-vendor agent coordination, and the lack of standards for agent knowledge- and context-sharing.
It calls for common information models, ontologies, and semantic mappings so agents share a consistent understanding of network conditions β the governance gap, not the technology, is the bottleneck for carrier-grade autonomous networks.
